FOR THOSE WHO NEED A GREAT ORAL LANGUAGE RESOURCE RIGHT NOW!

Look at the picture. What’s happening? What do you think happened prior to this? What do you think will happen next?

Being able to look at a picture and 1) talk about what may have happened before and 2) predict what will happen next is a great skill to have. It stimulates the use of complex sentence structures and imaginative thought.

In using this language resource, students are encouraged to use gestalt perspective. That is, they are encouraged to look at features of the picture and draw them together to make meaningful assumptions and predictions. Gestalt perspective is necessary in many social situations and also for comprehending narratives. It is a something that is impaired in many students who have autism spectrum disorder.

This great oral language resource promotes:

  • Use of tense
  • Use of the modal verb “might”
  • Use of complex conjunctions
  • Use of gestalt perspective
  • Sequencing
  • It is suitable for early to middle primary.
