Away With Words

Look at the picture. What do you think happened BEFORE this goat stood up on the laundry basket? What do you think will happen AFTER?

Being able to look at a picture and 1) talk about what may have happened before and 2) predict what will happen next is a great skill to have. It stimulates the use of complex sentence structures and imaginative thought.

AWAY WITH WORDS provides lots of stimulus pictures similar to the one above – and also loads of other word and picture stimuli to promote great oral language…

Originally created in 1995 by Elizabeth Love and Sue Reilly, Away with Words has remained popular for almost twenty years. In 2014, the resource was revised and re-illustrated by speech pathologist, Lucia Smith. It is appropriate to be used in the middle primary years and onwards.

The contents are arranged into five language sections. Each section’s content is provided in two different formats; as printable cards in the “CARDS” folder (PDF documents) and as images in the “SLIDESHOW” folder (JPEG files).

The sections are:

  • BEFORE AND AFTER
  • THING-A-ME-JIGS
  • SAME BUT DIFFERENT
  • CONNECTIONS
  • IF

A “GAME BOARD” is also included and can be printed and used with the cards.

A sample from each language section can be seen in the gallery of images.
