Lucia Smith from Pelican Talk is a speech pathologist with 30 years’ experience. She runs training for schools, preschools, councils and allied health services on a variety of topics. She also presents training sessions previously run by Love and Reilly (revised and updated).
Sessions can be run face-to-face or via Zoom. Popular topics are below. Workshops are adjusted to the needs of your service/school.
- Being a Super Language Support
- What is dyslexia (and what is NOT dyslexia)?
- Evidence-based teaching of literacy
- Preventing Reading and Spelling Difficulties
- Language Development
- Speech Sound Development
- Making the Teaching of Grammar Fun!
- Social and Emotional Learning
- Phonological Awareness and Phonics
- Getting Vowels Right ! (Why the spelling of vowels can be tricky)
- Using Puppets for Social and Emotional Learning
Participants in Lucia’s sessions receive easy-to-follow information that can be put into practice straight away. Information is based on current research. Sessions come with loads of free resources and recommendations for other resources and programmes that are supported by research (such as the Sounds-Write programme, in which she has trained).
An underlying theme in Lucia’s training is to have participants experience what it is like to have a speech, language or literacy difficulty. Only in truly understanding our children, can we know what will assist them in their learning.

Using Puppets for Social and Emotional Learning
These sessions include practical puppetry skills to be used in helping young children explore social and emotional learning. These sessions are open to the public although they are also included on the School Readiness Funding menu (Victoria) and are available through Kindy Uplift funding (QLD).
- Sessions can be run individually for services (we can come to you – or we regularly do the training via Zoom)
- Alternatively, we welcome you to join one of OUR sessions.
- Our Zooms are run over two sessions of 2.75 hrs – or you can attend one of our full-day training sessions at Melbourne City College (opposite Southern Cross Station).
